Alice in Wonderland and the surrealists

The aim of this lesson plan is to connect what Lewis Carroll was doing in words with what the surrealists in the early 20th century were doing with painting (e.g. Dalí, Magritte, Ernst, etc...). Students will discuss the elements of dreams (or nightmares) and nonsense in these works. Then they will be asked to write an essay exploring the fairy tale symbols in Alice's adventures, the critique of Victorian English life and distorsions in time, size and place. There is a vocabulary section in which we can listen to the pronunciation of some words.
