The Great Gatsby
The aim of this lesson plan is to deliver a dramatic reading of Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" and discuss its main themes (the American dream corrupted by wealth, the Jazz Age, the established upper class and the nouveau riche, etc...). In a selection of scenes, students have to figure out the major climax and how to emphasize it in a reading. They also have to determine a "basic performance concept": how many individual voices the scene requires, how these voices should blend and how these voices should contrast. While a group performs, members of the audience take notes about each oral interpretation to commenting on them afterwards. There is a vocabulary section with recorded pronunciations.
